Gender, Sex and the Eternal Human Soul

Posted by Charles Brown What is the nature of our soul and does it endure beyond death? How can a purposeful life be established without knowing something about the eternal principles or laws by which we exist? As we look at the endless creations in a vast cosmos do we ponder our place? Are we eternal beings with great potential or temporary flashes of electrochemical or random cosmic energy lacking any significance at all? What is the human soul? Is there an eternal aspect to our existence? If so how is it discovered? With what theological understanding can we define the soul with some specificity?  We generally adhere to sound scientific or medical advise, or at least we should. Do we adhere to sound theological or philosophical teachings as well, or do we prefer our own notions or those of some self-appointed professor's opinion that temporarily soothes our mortal minds? From my theological definition I understand that the soul is the spirit united with a body. At prese...

Endless Galaxies, The Never Ending Love of God

The scriptures speak to us in terms that seem ancient and unscientific. In reality, though they introduce us to the knowledge of beings that reign in the eternal and infinite heavens. They would be fully acquainted with every aspect of science.  Is not our science just a subset of God's science? Powerful, modern telescopes demonstrate how endless the galaxies are and yet traditional Christian scholars produced a theology that concluded that God was a one planet creator insofar as human salvation is concerned. Why did they place such a limit on God? We are no longer limited to the views that the naked eye can behold on a clear night as vast and marvellous as they are, but one that is almost incomprehensible, almost as it were a lens into eternity.  Religious philosophies and theologies have been heavily influenced by the opinions and limited viewpoints of scholars and philosophers. They profess not any communication from God but limit him to their viewpoints of what...

The Eternal Human Soul

From a Latter-Day Saint perspective we teach that the soul is the spirit united with a body. At present it is the union of our spirit with this physical mortal body. Unique to LDS theology we understand that the spirits of all men and women are the literal offspring of God. Theological understanding of mainstream orthodox Bible scholars teaches we are simply pawns or robot like creations brought into existence out of nothing.  This essay is my observation regarding some of the things I have learned from being married for almost four decades, raising eight children, counseling with others as an ecclesiastical leader and reading and attending educational and leadership seminars and other life experiences. I will cover some of the understandings that I have had over my lifetime. I became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints when I was 17 years old. My opinions of course are my own and not to be construed as anything else on behalf of the church. Before ...

Light, Life and Intelligence

Think about the science of light that we understand and the science we have yet to discover. Who would have imagined 60 years ago that we could cut metal with light, split apart atoms and perform delicate surgery. The complexity of it is astounding and we take for granted the common experience of its existence. Something invisible makes all things visible. On a clear night the sky reveals to us thousands of lights even millions and billions now that we have advanced light gathering instruments. Stars that seem to offer eternal light when we learn something of their composition and the time that their light has been traveling. Our own sun has a scientifically theorized life of 10 billion years.  A seeming eternity to the mortal life span. From the light of our sun and its power, we derive energy to live. Solar power is endless so far as we are concerned and as we seek to harness it there is a certain freedom to having it. It can charge batteries to hold power and it charges ...
